Did You Know that the Silvertip Shark (Carcharhinus albimarginatus)….
.….is a large species of Requiem shark in the Carcharhinidae family and is found throughout the tropical Indian and Pacific Oceans around offshore islands and coral reefs down to 800 meters deep?
.….gets its name from the white tips and borders on all of its fins and is often confused with other sharks including Grey Reef Sharks, Galapagos Sharks, and Oceanic Whitetip Sharks? However, Grey Reef Sharks have dark tips on the pectoral fins and trailing edge of their caudal fin; Galapagos Sharks are slightly smaller and lack white-silver markings; and Oceanic Whitetip Sharks lack the white-silver marking on the tips of its pectoral fins.
.….is large and considered to be an aggressive shark, often dominating interactions with sharks that are larger than itself? They average between 6 and 8 feet long but can be as large as 10 feet and over 300 pounds. Adults often exhibit scars from interactions with other sharks. They are considered potentially harmful to humans and caution is advised when encountering this shark underwater.
