Did You Know that some Sharks Glow in the Dark….
.….in order to communicate with each other by releasing glowing light from their skin in patterns that are unique to each species and even sex?
Molecules inside a shark’s scales transform how shark skin interacts with light to create the luminescence.
About a dozen species of sharks exhibit some form of bioluminescence including the Chain Catshark, Swellshark, Kitefin Shark, Blackbelly Lanternshark, and Southern Lanternshark, Cookiecutter Shark, Largetooth Cookiecutter Shark, Pygmy Shark, Longnose Pygmy Shark, Podcast Shark, and Taillight Shark. The Kitefin Shark is the largest of all “glowing” sharks and can grow to approximately six feet in length.
