Did You Know that the term “Card Shark”….

.….is more common in American, Canadian, and Australian English than the term “Card Sharp,” which is the preferred saying in British English? The two spellings have often been used interchangeably across regions but both generally refer to a professional card player and/or a player skilled in cheating at card games. The British version sharp more often implies cheating while the American version shark often refers to a level of expertise.

.….is found in print when referring to cheaters dating back to 1681 (card sharp) and 1599 (card shark)?

.….likely does not originate from the fish but instead from the German word schurke, a word that meant cheat or swindler in the 16th century?
