Did You Know that Captain Nemo fought Sharks….

.….and sharks played a prominent role in Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea? The french author (1828–1905) wrote of Captain Nemo’s Nautilus, a magical submarine that traveled the world’s oceans encountering various shipwrecks and sea monsters. Nemo and his companions would sometimes put on diving suits to leave the submarine and hunt for sharks.

In one prominent story, Captain Nemo fights off a shark when “a dreadful battle was joined.”

A shark “of huge size” appeared in the story as a gigantic shadow above a poor East Indian pearl diver who became paralyzed in fear. Stationed next to him, Captain Nemo saved the other diver by driving a dagger into the belly of the fearsome, man–eating shark. The shark began to fall and weigh down the Captain onto the seafloor as it struggled to survive. Its jaws then opened to finish Captain Nemo, but another, Ned Land, “rushed forward with his harpoon and driven its dreadful point into the shark's underside.”
