Did You Know that Sharks sometimes have ‘ride alongs’….
….called Remoras, which are fish that attach themselves to larger marine life like sharks? They use suction pads located on their heads and ride on the shark’s body in order to feed on dropped pieces of food as well as parasites on the shark’s skin.
Various species of remoras like the live sharksucker or slender sharksucker are known to attach themselves to various hosts including sharks, rays, larger fish, sea turtles, whales, dolphins, ships, and even sometimes scuba divers. Remoras should not be confused with pilot fish, a species that travels with sharks in a similar symbiotic relationship. Pilot fish swim alongside sharks but do not attach themselves.
While most shark species tolerate remoras, not all are happy with this symbiotic relationship. Sandbar Sharks and Lemon Sharks have been documented acting aggressively and even consuming remoras.
