Shark Trivia

Did You Know that Volusia County has the most Shark attacks of any county….

.….in the United States since records began? With approximately 900 shark attacks since 1882, over 320 of those have occurred in Volusia County.

Volusia County’s two primary beaches are Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach, which is nicknamed the “Sharkbite Capital of the World.”

Especially when considering the large number of beachgoers that populate the area every year, attacks and fatalities are rare in this tourist hotspot.

Shark sightings happen near daily and most bites occur simply as sharks follow the bait fish that heavily populate the warm waters of the area.
