Shark Trivia

Did You Know that Shark gods were popular in Hawaiian folklore….

.….and several were believed to be the guardians of the oceans?

It was commonly believed that when a person died, the family of the deceased could offer the corpse to become a shark. The dead body was then believed to reincarnate through a slow transformation into a shark.

The acting Ōlelo Hawaiʻi (or Kahuna revered as a priest, sorcerer, wizard, shaman, or magician) would then tell the family that specific markings on a shark's body represented the clothing worn by the deceased.

The family would later put great trust in this particular shark, or aumakua, to steer fish into their nets; protect them from danger; and kill enemies. The aumakua would be called by the name of the deceased.
