Did You Know that you can find thousands of ‘snowbird’ sharks….
….swimming just outside the surf zone in the waters off of Palm Beach County during a great migration in the winter? Each year, thousands of Blacktip Sharks gather in waters along Palm Beach County, up to 100 to 200 meters off the beach in some spots. This generally occurs during January through February.
According to researchers, the frigid waters in the north make the somewhat warmer winter waters in Florida more attractive.
Blacktip Sharks normally grow to around 6-feet long and are usually following schools of fish to feed on as part of the migration. Blacktips eat baitfish which helps to weed out the sick and unhealthy and create a healthy ecosystem.
Researchers have also observed some Great White Sharks as part of this migration.
