Shark Trivia

Did You Know that Fishing Nets are indiscriminately killing Sharks….

….and are responsible for the deaths of countless shark species as well as many other harmless animals like dolphins, turtles, and even some endangered species?

Although not designed to trap sharks, fishing nets, scoop up any animal that is unfortunate enough to be in the water through which they are dragged.

Teams of researchers around the world found that overfishing, often done with these nets, has wiped out sharks on up to 20% of the world's reefs.

Many affluent nations with strict fishing controls, especially the United States and Australia, still have an abundant number of sharks. Some countries, like the Bahamas who banned all shark fishing in 2011, see sharks as both an important part of the environment as well as a big driver of tourism.
