Shark Trivia

Did You Know that the primary Color of most Sharks is some shade of grey or brown….

.….and they’re also dull in their skintone? The coloration of sharks is unique to each species and is used as a form of protection from predators as well an aid to help them as hunters.

Some sharks can also be colorful. The Goblin Shark is bright pink; Mako Sharks are a sleek metallic blue; and Blue Sharks are blue.

Some sharks have skin full of patterns like Wobbegong Sharks, Bamboo Sharks, and Zebra Sharks. Their camouflage skin allows them to blend in with coral reefs, sea beds, and other elements in their habitats.

Some sharks like the Great White Shark are darker on the top half of their bodies and white or much lighter on the bottom half of their bodies. This coloration is a type of camouflage called counter shading and it makes them harder to see when looking down or from underneath when looking up.

Additional color variations typically exist on their fins, which may be somewhat different in shading than the color of the rest of their body. They may also have additional dark or light coloring on the tips of their fins like Black Tip Reef Sharks and Oceanic Whitetip Sharks.
